Question:
Is health insurance mandatory for employees in Dubai?
Health insurance is set to become mandatory for all private sector employees and domestic workers across the United Arab Emirates starting from January 1, 2025.
Currently, health insurance is only mandatory in Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, regulated by the respective authorities. However, the new decision will require employers in all emirates, including Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, and Fujairah, to provide health insurance coverage for their employees. By law, employers and sponsors will be responsible for bearing the costs of health insurance for their staff and domestic workers. This nationwide standard for health insurance aims to make healthcare costs more manageable for UAE residents, ensuring all private sector employees and domestic staff have access to at least a basic level of health insurance coverage paid for by their employers.
